The Climate Chronicles: The Negative Impacts of Bursting Firecrackers During Festivals (Article By Tanvee B.)

Festivals like Diwali and New Year are often celebrated enthusiastically, and bursting firecrackers has become a common tradition. However, this practice negatively impacts the environment, health, and society. Let's explore these impacts one by one.

Environmental Impact:

1. Air Pollution: Firecrackers release a significant amount of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) and toxic gases such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide. These pollutants contribute to severe air quality deterioration, leading to smog and respiratory issues.

2. Noise Pollution: The loud noise from firecrackers can exceed safe decibel levels, causing hearing loss, stress, and anxiety in both humans and animals. It disrupts the natural behavior of wildlife and pets, leading to disorientation and fear.

3. Waste Generation: The remnants of firecrackers, including paper, plastic, and metal, contribute to litter and environmental degradation. These materials are often non-biodegradable and can harm soil and water quality.

Health Impact

1. Respiratory Problems: The inhalation of fine particulate matter and toxic gases can lead to respiratory issues such as asthma, bronchitis, and other lung diseases, and those with pre-existing health conditions are particularly at risk.

2. Cardiovascular Issues: Exposure to high levels of air pollution from firecrackers can increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

3. Eye and Skin Irritation: The chemicals released by firecrackers can cause eye irritation, redness, and pain. Skin contact with firecracker residues can lead to allergic reactions and burns.

Social and Economic Impact

1. Economic Burden: The healthcare costs associated with treating pollution-related illnesses can be substantial. Additionally, the cleanup and waste management efforts required after festivals add to the economic burden on municipalities

2. Safety Hazards: Firecrackers pose a significant risk of burns, injuries, and even fatalities.
