How to Be Sustainable This New Year (Article by Tanvee B.)

Proud Raksriaksorn

As we enter another year, the promise of new beginnings and better choices fills the air. Amidst all the celebrations, why not take a moment to reflect on the impact our actions have on the planet? This year, let’s not just resolve to live healthier or more productive lives but also pledge to live sustainably. It’s easier than you think, and the ripple effects of even small steps can make a world of difference. Here are some practical and achievable ways to live sustainably in the new year.

Making sustainability your New Year resolution can be the first step toward positive change. A resolution as simple as "I will reduce my single-use plastic consumption" or "I will plant a tree every month" can guide your actions and keep you focused. Please write it down, share it with your friends, or make it a family goal. The key is to keep it specific and realistic.

  1. Take a closer look at your daily habits. Do you find yourself leaving lights on when they’re not needed? Or buying products with excessive packaging? Here are a few areas to consider:

    • Switch to LED bulbs and unplug devices when not in use.

    • Fix leaks and use a bucket instead of a hose while cleaning.

    • Walk, cycle, or use public transport whenever possible. Consider carpooling to reduce emissions.

  1. The "less is more" approach not only declutters your life but also reduces waste. Before purchasing anything new, ask yourself: “Do I really need this?” Focus on buying quality items that last longer. Also, donate or recycle things you no longer use instead of throwing them away.

  1. Shopping local reduces your carbon footprint while supporting small businesses in your community. Look for brands that prioritize ethical practices, use sustainable materials, or give back to the environment. Farmers' markets are a great place to start for fresh produce without the environmental cost of transportation.

  1. The "3 Rs" (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) should be your mantra. Bring your own reusable bags when shopping, carry a water bottle instead of buying plastic ones, and choose products with minimal packaging. Composting organic waste is another effective way to reduce landfill contributions.

Why It Matters

Every action we take has an impact on the environment, whether we realize it or not. By choosing sustainability, we’re not only preserving resources for future generations but also improving our own quality of life. Cleaner air, healthier ecosystems, and a stable climate are all benefits of making sustainable choices today.
