Is the threat posed by antibiotic resistance increasing as a result of climate change?

In 2021, microbiologist Adwoa Padiki Nalti developed a bacterial infection and his tonsils began to swell. She had suffered from the same symptoms the previous year. Both illnesses occurred during one of the two annual rainy seasons in Ghana's capital, Accra, where she lives. She knew that the high humidity and humidity this time of year promotes the growth of microorganisms. The doctor prescribed antibiotics, but unlike before, the drugs had no effect. Bacteria have developed resistance. For two weeks, the inflammation in her tonsils got worse"It was painful to drink. It was painful to eat. I could barely speak," said Padiki Ngati, an antibiotic resistance researcher at the University of Ghana in Accra."I was worried "Fortunately, the final combination of two antibiotics worked. Otherwise, she said, she might have died from the infection." Fighting Antimicrobial Resistance This episode explores how two major threats to human health, climate change and the spread of antibiotic resistance, may intersect.

According to Padiki Nalti, climate change has made heavy rains more frequent in Ghana. These conditions promote the growth of bacteria, including antibiotic-resistant microorganisms. Floods also spread antibiotic-resistant bacteria from sewage systems into people's homes and drinking water, she added. Pamela Yeh, an evolutionary biologist at the University of California, Los Angeles, said that while researchers have some understanding of how climate change drives increases in antibiotic resistance, He said he is studying the mechanism and how big the impact is."Climate change and antibiotic resistance are two of the biggest health challenges of our time," she says."Researchers are beginning to study how they are connected.

How Climate Technology Is Being Ramped Up

The past year has seen significant changes in our commitment to climate technology under the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement, paving the way for greater ambition in this important area in 2024. Technology plays a fundamental role in mobilizing climate action and building a greener world. Technology is also a fundamental enabler for bringing about the unprecedented social and economic changes needed to sustain the goal of limiting global average temperatures to a maximum of 1.5°C.At the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP28 held in Dubai late last year, UNFCCC Executive Director Simon Stiel said: “Only by working together, leveraging technology and taking bold steps towards a new, better and more sustainable world will we get there.” The important agreement at COP28 is the result of the first global inventory under the Paris Agreement, also known as the UAE Consensus, and requires parties to: I'm asking you to take it.At the global level, triple renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency gains by 2030.Funding climate change technology is important. As part of this decision, Parties established a technology implementation program supported, inter alia, by the operational arm of the financial mechanism, to strengthen support for the implementation of technology priorities identified by developing countries.
